I haven’t done anything like this for over 20 years!
I was looking for a reset - a way to recharge my spirit, bring back some joy, and clear my mind. Now I am an empty nesting I have no excuses for not planning a much needed mini-break.
I had been looking forward to this trip for months, because I couldn’t remember the last time I dressed up & had a fancy night out, or the last time I had a girls weekend! The thought of traveling and not enjoying myself was stressing me out, especially with my endometriosis acting up before the trip. After doing everything I could to prepare for managing the pain and discomfort, and with my friend Leah's support, I decided to take the plunge..
This was our first girls weekend away together; since we met as coaching buddies 18 months ago. We aimed for a relaxed trip where we could have meaningful chats, discover the city, enjoy some fun, and just go with the flow; no matter what came our way. We felt a mix of excitement and nerves in the lead up to the gala awards night. Glamorous events aren't really our thing, but we were eager to step out of our comfort zones and enjoy a fabulous evening.
After a big first time meeting hug- we strapped on the sneakers and started exploring Melbourne. You can’t go to Melbourne without exploring the fashion and shopping (especially when you are getting ready for an awards night)! We trekked through every arcade, and every level of every major shopping precinct. We were rewarded with perfect purchases at a discounted price!
We also explored the lane ways and alleys looking for cool dining spots to try over the next couple of days. As we hit the pavement, conversations flowed as we shared life stories.
The excitement for our coaching academy's gala dinner and awards night was growing, and we had a blast preparing for it.
We even treated ourselves to a makeup artist to add some extra sparkle to our look! Of course, not everything was smooth sailing - we had to deal with unexpected rain and some outfit glitches, but we just laughed through the mishaps and kept moving forward.
It was a wonderful uplifting evening, listening to the incredible difference so many life coaches are making. It was an honour to celebrate their achievements. When the formalities finished the fun started and we danced well into the night.
On our final day after a well deserved sleep in and a final selfie, we went went our separate ways for brunch catch ups before flying home. After arriving home, I thought I’d be exhausted and struggling to prepare for a new working week - but I actually felt refreshed and revitalised.
Reflecting on this adventure, stepping out of my comfort zone was undoubtedly worth it. This trip wasn't just about dressing up or having a fancy night out; it allowed me to reconnect with joy, clear my mind, and overcome personal challenges, like managing my endometriosis with the help of my friend Leah. Our first girls' weekend away, filled with exploration, laughter, and a bit of glamour at the gala, not only strengthened our bond but also recharged my spirit in ways I hadn't imagined.
If you are not sure about life outside of the nest then it might be easier to explore what's next with a supportive friend. Planning a weekend away with a friend can be an exciting opportunity to create unforgettable memories.
Here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:
Discuss Interests and Expectations: Start by talking about what each of you hopes to get out of the trip. Whether it’s relaxation, adventure, cultural experiences, or shopping, aligning your expectations is crucial.
Choose Your Destination Together: Select a destination that suits both your interests and budget.
Plan Accommodation: Decide on the type of accommodation that best suits your needs, whether it’s a hotel, Airbnb, or a boutique guesthouse.
Create a Loose Itinerary: While it’s great to have some planned activities, allow for spontaneity. Make a list of must-see sights and must-do activities, but be flexible.
Stay Open and Communicative: Keep an open line of communication about how things are going and what you’d like to do.
Be Flexible and Patient: Travel often involves unexpected situations. Approach them with flexibility and humour. Remember, the goal is to enjoy each other’s company and create lasting memories.
Document Your Memories: Take lots of photos and consider keeping a travel journal. These memories will be precious in the years to come.
What are you waiting for? Time to start planning!
