In my last blog several years ago, I wrote about finding solace in chaos during the early days of the global pandemic. Three years later, I find myself in a similar situation, grappling with the aftermath of another crisis.
A year ago, I embraced my newfound status as an empty nester, eager to embark on a new chapter in life by selling our home, moving to a coastal unit, and supporting my daughter's move to pursue her ballet studies on the other side of the country. However, life had other plans in store.
My husband fell ill with a heart condition just before we were to move out of our family home and two weeks before my daughter was to travel across the country. I was left worried for his life, panicked about the move, and uncertain how to support my daughter. Fortunately, he recovered, but the journey was far from over.
At the same time, the pandemic worsened, and we were unable to travel with our daughter, forcing me to send her off with heavy heart and two large suitcases.
The first call with her during her mandatory quarantine was heart-wrenching, and I questioned if I had made the right decision.
The struggles did not end there. My younger sister fell ill and was hospitalised, only to receive a terminal diagnosis of incurable leukaemia.
She passed away just two days later, leaving me consumed by grief and grappling with my own mortality. The loss of someone so close is incredibly painful and left me feeling lost and hopeless.
Last year was filled with an overwhelming amount of sorrow and loss for me. I bid farewell to our family abode and my daughter. I lost my sister, and also endured the fear of my husband's health issues. Such intense feelings of grief, agony, and loss.
Coping with loss is a personal and unique journey. Although my heart still aches, giving myself permission to move forward is vital for my healing.
As I reflect on the hardships of 2022 and start 2023, I am filled with hope and determination to move forward. While difficult times can leave us feeling uncertain, life is too precious to not keep moving forward.
